Emily Post needs to update her etiquette rule; that every gift giver should put a gift receipt in the box. That way, the gift recipient doesn’t have any problem whatsoever when they go back to the store.
It is absolutely reasonable for a store to say ‘you have to show me that you bought it here, when, and at what price’, ‘cause if you don’t have a proof of purchase, you may wind up getting maybe the lowest price the item sold for in the past ninety days ... .
You don’t have a god given right to return merchandise.
If a seller wanted to have an ‘all sales final’ policy, they could ... but most stores, particularly this time of year, have a relatively liberal policy.
