I often say ... ‘even people that you don’t align with, make them your friends’ ... .
Often I think it’s really just simple conversation with these types. Find something that you can go and talk to them about. Find some common ground, and have a conversation.
It may be that person has a certain level of expertise in an area that you have an interest in, and [you] say ‘Hey, can I stop by for half an hour; can we chat? I’ve got some questions’ ... .
I don’t mean to say you do this in a way that’s contrived, but you’re really looking for commonalities to form that relationship ... . That’s the important step that a lot of people miss. They tend to want to isolate, pull back, and not interact with people, and that’s when the wall is built.
And it gets higher and higher as time goes by.
