Once they approach adolescence, you’re in trouble if you’re just laying down rules for them; you’re just feeding that wish for them to rebel against all of that .. .
That doesn’t mean that if you have a bottom line you back off ... .
It’s [just] amazing how many parents and teens don’t know how to negotiate. And it’s a skill that they need to have, and that parents need to teach themselves if they don’t have it.
